LightSheer Diode Laser System for Hair Removal
The LightSheer Diode Laser System is indicated for the treatment of unwanted or excess hair. It was developed from research performed at the Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, under the direction of R. Rox Anderson, M.D. of Harvard Medical School. The near-infrared laser energy produced by the system is selectively absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft as well as the surrounding follicle, causing thermal destruction of several key anatomic sites. Consequently, the hair's re-growth is significantly impeded or eliminated.
In February, 1998, the LightSheerTM System was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for hair removal as well as the treatment of superficial leg veins. The system is manufactured by Palomar Medical Technologies and distributed by Coherent, Inc. A key component of the LightSheerTM System is the ChillTipTM cooling lens. It consists of a cold sapphire crystal through which the laser energy is focused. Its cooling action protects the epidermis from thermal damage, while the lens itself converges the laser light to deliver a high dose of energy deep into the skin to hair follicles.
With the ever-increasing popularity of laser hair removal, the ability to offer unsurpassed results to the largest variety of patients is crucial. The LightSheer Diode Laser System, with its unique combination of laser parameters and patented ChiIITip protection, makes this a reality.
Widest Range of Skin Types
The LightSheer provides enhanced protection of the epidermis without compromising efficacy. This allows the treatment of a wider range of patients; even those with skin types IV and V can be candidates for hair removal with the LightSheer system.
Permanent Hair Reduction
Permanence is an important factor in a patient's decision about hair removal. LightSheer is the first diode laser cleared for permanent hair reduction--a long-term stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing after a treatment regime. This was confirmed in a prospective clinical study conducted at leading research centers.
Optimum Patient Comfort
With the LightSheer, patients can avoid the pain commonly associated with waxing and electrolysis. LightSheer's patented ChillTip hand piece minimizes patient discomfort by protecting the epidermis and providing an additional anesthetic effect.
Contact Cooling with the ChiIlTip
The LightSheer ChiIITip hand piece allows more aggressive targeting of melanin in the hair shaft because it helps protect the surrounding skin from related thermal damage. The integrated sapphire tip cools the epidermis before, during and after exposure for increased patient comfort and safety. At the same time, it compresses the skin to bring the laser light closer to the base of the follicle.
